Analysis of the use of artificial intelligence among teachers and its impact on second language teaching in Canada

We invite you to watch our invitation video.

This project aims to explore the use of generative artificial intelligence in second language learning across various Canadian contexts. It seeks to address questions such as:

  • Which tools are being used?
  • What types of support are provided by educational institutions?
  • What are teachers’ main concerns?

These are among the key questions this study aims to answer. Drawing on activity theory approach, we seek to understand how generative artificial intelligence influences teaching practices at all levels of education, from primary school to university. We also aim to identify the practices considered most effective across different second language teaching contexts.

This study is conducted jointly by TÉLUQ and Université Laval and has been approved by the two ethics committees. It is open to teachers of all second languages who work in Canada. Through questionnaires and interviews, we aim to give voice to as many teachers as possible on this issue.

At the conclusion of the project, we aim to provide teachers across Canada with a comprehensive report outlining how artificial intelligence affects their work and identifying tools that may be most appropriate for their specific contexts.
